- Can I use ReadyReturn if I had other income
(such as a second job or interest income)?
Yes. You will need to update your return to show all of your income and to claim all of your taxes withheld. You can report income from the following sources using ReadyReturn online:
- Wages, salaries, tips, and taxable scholarships and fellowship grants reported on an original Form W-2.
- Interest and dividends reported on Form 1099-INT or 1099-DIV.
- Unemployment compensation, paid family leave, and overpayment of tax reported on Form 1099-G.
- Fully and partially taxable IRA distributions, pensions, and annuities reported on Form 1099-R.
- Tier 1 and tier 2 railroad retirement payments reported on Form RRB-1099 or RRB-1099-R.
- Social Security benefits reported on Form SSA-1099.
- Gambling winnings reported on Form W-2G.
- Alimony that was included in your federal income.
- Can I use ReadyReturn if I got married and/or had a child last year?
Yes. You will need to update your return.
- Can I use ReadyReturn if I
entered into a registered domestic partnership (RDP) last year?
Generally, yes. You can use ReadyReturn if you are not required to complete a pro forma California return or the California RDP Adjustments Worksheet - Recalculated Federal Adjusted Gross Income. For more information, get FTB Pub 737, Tax Information for Registered Domestic Partners.
- Can I use ReadyReturn if I qualify for the federal earned income tax credit (EITC)?
Yes. EITC reduces your federal tax obligation. For more information, visit IRS.gov and search for eitc. Currently, no comparable state credit exists.
- Can I use ReadyReturn if I can be claimed as a dependent?
Yes. If you indicated on your 2007 California income tax return that you were claimed as a dependent by another person, your ReadyReturn will reflect this. If you are no longer claimed as a dependent, you will need to update your return.
- Can I use ReadyReturn if I need to itemize my deductions?
Yes. You can update your return to reflect your charitable contributions, medical expenses, interest paid, taxes, etc. Your California income tax will be less if you take the larger of:
- Your California itemized deductions.
- Your California standard deduction.
- Can I use ReadyReturn if I qualify for the renter's credit and/or the child and dependent care expenses credit?
Yes. If you qualify, you can claim these credits using ReadyReturn. However, you will need to update your return to receive the credit.
- Can I use ReadyReturn if I only lived in California for part of the year?
No. Nonresidents and part-year residents are taxed differently than California residents. You will need to complete a long or short Form 540NR.
- Can I use ReadyReturn if I've moved out of California?
Yes, if you lived in California for all of 2008. If you did not live in California for all of 2008, you will need to complete a long or short Form 540NR.
