  • This comment has nothing to do with ReadyReturn which was great by the way. I just have to comment on how wonderful it feels to have the e-file system tell me that I owed an additional $39.00 in taxes. Then I adjusted the return to show the whopping $16.00 in interest income I was paid on a savings account this year, and suddenly the amount of tax I owed goes up to $48.00. I would love to have someone explain that logic to me. In the future I guess I will just keep my money in my mattress.

  • It just makes me VERY nervous when I provide my SSN. I would prefer to use the CSN number provided. In the event that it is not available, a site should be provided that you would be able to retrieve the CSN with the proper requested info.

  • It took me a while to locate ReadyReturn, it should be the first thing you see on the site, I kept choosing CalFile which was not how I wanted to file my taxes.

  • The letter sent by FTB and web site do not tell you how to get to the screen to enter your SSN, name and CSN - it was only by clicking on all the buttons that I finally found how to get that screen to come up.

  • This is wonderful. I wish the Feds did it this way. One minor issue:  I printed out my return once, made no changes, and later was asked to print it again. In my case, I should have been told that the 2nd printout would be redundant.

  • Add a clear “Start” button for “Normal returns w/o CSN number” People that received CSN number I spent 20 minutes trying to find the “Start” button having CSN. Indicate if the individual CSN  shall be kept for the next year return, or a new number will be mailed. Add "Email Address" option for the people preferring this type of communications. Start a Six Sigma project with the most likely mistakes made to change; add ‘help’ buttons. Add mail from CAFTB to Survey Question 10.

  • I liked the service and will continue to use it in the future. I would like to say that electronic filing of taxes should be a government service provided to all taxpayers. The service needs to be secure to prevent the loss of taxpayers’ sensitive information.

  • The website timed out twice while printing and copying my return. I then had to re-enter my changes twice. If this could be resolved, it would be a wonderful experience.

  • When looking the form over it is annoying that all the work isn’t shown. For example, taxable interest from a 1099-INT, I had done the form by hand before trying online, but still it would be nice. Just a general complaint, I hate whole dollar rounding, stop making the tax forms more accessible.

  • Overall, an excellent resource. My only problem is that when I clicked, "make changes" I had to re-enter a lot of information, when all I’d initially wanted to change was one line.

  • The on-line filing process was efficient and easy to submit. Only disappointment was that I had to pay more tax instead of receiving a refund.

The only issue I encountered was when I tried to print my return for my records it would only print the instructions page until I excluded the page by printing only pages 2-5 and by that time the service had timed out but, it did not take long to go through the process again.   • It would be very nice if direct debit was not the only option for submitting payment electronically. I would feel much more comfortable about doing so via credit card.
  • The only real comment I have is that it took me a couple of tries before I finally found how to continue after getting my user number. The link to continue is at the bottom of a page of information, and it’s just not clear that it’s there.

I exited the page the first time because I didn’t clearly see how to pay. It is a little inconvenient to have to go back to a website to make the payment.   • I think this is the great option for taxpayers with simple forms. A government website that provides this kind of services is a treasure in the making. Collecting/tracking GOVERNMENT taxes should not be profitable for private parties. Providing this services for the next level of taxpayer a slightly more complex tax base would be most beneficial.   • Please make the login process more like the invite letter, or change the invite letter (i.e., please read two pages of info then login). Invite letter said to go to banner login. After the banner, I had to navigate thru at least two more screens with NO mention of where to login and only a continue button at bottom of the screen. This difference between easy sounding letter -- reality, made me nervous. Once I got logged in filing was easy. It only took five minutes. I plan to keep e-filing this way!

  • I was a little confused when I thought I needed my adjusted gross income amount from 2006 which I couldn’t locate immediately, but then I realized I only needed the CSN from the top of the notice from the Franchise Tax Board notification I mentioned in 10. I have to say I really liked the TeleFile from a few years back, phoning in taxes was even less stressful than using the internet which has become very confusing to many people.

Now, e-file is faster; but, instructions are still not terribly clear: I printed twice from 2 different places in the instructions, not knowing at the first opportunity that there would be another, final one.   • The FTB booklet I received in the mail with instructions, forms and charts for California 540/540A was very helpful. I figured everything out ahead of time on the enclosed 540A Form, then went to the computer and made sure everything was the same, or adjusted the figures until it was. The two methods combined were good.
  • This is very easy. I spent many hours trying to e-file the federal return and have finally had to do it by hand and mail it. As long as there are not any "hidden" problems that haven’t appeared yet, this is the best way to file income taxes for people that use the EZ form.

  • I have been hesitant to e-file with the state because the previous time I used a state sanctioned program, the program refused to accept my return stating that my figures were wrong, then charged me for the service anyway. I ended up filing a paper return with the identical figures. It was accepted.

  • The security part made me uneasy. There is so much identity theft over the internet! But I didn’t want to pay [a tax professional] $220.00 to do what is one page of return. The FTB has made my life easier by letting me pay back taxes on installment payments. By claiming 0 dependents I will no longer owe you money. It made a difference of approximately $550.00 between the IRS which hurt but it is better not to incur all the fines, late payments, etc. Thank you for your 800 number with all my questions.

However, I would suggest putting a button on the homepage that says "File Now" or something to that effect so that people would know where to file instantly and immediately. It was a little hard to navigate and locate where exactly I needed to go to file my taxes.

  • I liked how easy it is, but I wasn’t sure the site was legit until I did a little research online. I think you should instill more confidence by providing the last 4 number of SSN or a state seal or something. Also, Why was the snail mail letter sent out so late? I received in it March 12th. Had I filed early I would’ve been out 30 dollars using [commercial website] for the same thing. FTB should’ve put the word out sooner.

  • Way too much printing! For a two page return -- I had to print out ten pages. I didn’t like that in the "view my return" I had to print it so that I could see it since the print on-screen was way too tiny. Even though there we no changes I was forced to print out a second copy. I liked the convenience of not having to calculate the tax myself and am more confident that it is correct.

Upon reviewing the prepared return I found that my earned income line 12 on 540 tax form was improperly keyed in by a difference of approximately 7,000 dollars.=  To my dismay I systematically made changes to the return realizing I could have easily used the CalFile. I realize this is the first year of ReadyReturn, but I thought this was to be a simple straightforward process and found it not to be.
